TOSCA

Tosca's family sent us this note about her after her Board & Train stay with us.

Tosca's Story

We rescued Tosca from St Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison NJ. It's a wonderful shelter for anyone who is looking to adopt a dog. They had 6 black Labrador Retriever pups, a Norwich Terrier (our second choice) and two Chihuahuas . . . an amazing selection. Having just come from the frenzy of a Saturday morning at another shelter, St Hubert's was quite a relaxing environment.

What we saw was this little face from behind a cage.  She was the only dog not barking, just looking at us with sad brown eyes. My husband (who was against getting a dog) simply could not resist. He asked if we could spend time with her and the shelter staff gladly complied. We walked her into a room and played with her for about 45 minutes. We were told she came from Puerto Rico in some sort of missionary reciprocity arrangement. I haven't had a chance to investigate that but people I meet in the dog parks have confirmed this is something a lot of shelters do.

We know so little about her but she's showing us who she is day by day.

Tosca was very friendly, climbing up for a lick, a smell, a pet . . . very sweet and no noise, not a single bark. She did something there that I now know is part of her personality, she sniffed the door then sat facing it....she's always ready to go unless she's asleep or playing.

Needless to say she came home with us that day. She continues to surprise us. She's a good eater and beautifully house trained. She loves to play and snuggle. She's super compliant about almost everything. She's stubborn on a leash but learning to trust us humans to lead the way.

We came to The Cultured Canine to help us with her training. As Diane saw from our first meeting, Tosca has some hunting dog in her. She is so strong! She can pull a leash like a 100 lb dog. And she weighs all of 18 lbs.  Our training project is to teach Tosca to pay attention to us instead of squirrels while she is on leash.  It's a process but Tosca is making good progress.  Chicken at the right moment helps!

People ask us 'what kind of dog is that?'  'I don't know' is my response 'but she's a good one!'"

We thank Tosca's family for trusting her to our care for her very first board & train stay shortly after her adoption.
